“Falling” written by Harry Styles and Thomas Hull is a sonically beautiful song. Styles tells the story of someone who no longer feels like themself. The main character of the song realizes they hurt someone they loved and no longer like who they are. Let’s dive in to the first verse.

The first verse displays a feeling of loneliness. The lyrics, “And there’s no one to blame but the drink in my wandering hands, forget what I said, it’s not what I meant” show that he was under the influence during the fight. Styles knows that this isn’t how he truly feels but, is unable to show his loved one.

The chorus to “Falling” shows his regrets. He feels pain because he caused his partner pain. “What if I’m someone I don’t want around? I’m falling again,” Styles starts to doubt himself and feel guilt. He begins to hate who he has become and regrets his words. He says he’s “falling again,” meaning this situation has probably happened multiple times.

The second verse starts with the phrase, ”You said you cared, and you missed me too, and I’m well aware I write too many songs about you.” This phrase is after the couple have split. Harry is thinking over how they still have feelings but cannot be together. The pair were in love but are not good for each other. Styles being the songwriter he is uses that as his way to cope with the break up. He writes many songs about his past lover. The next part of the verse is, “And the coffee’s out at the Beachwood Cafe, and it kills me ’cause I know we’ve run out of things we can say.” The Beachwood Cafe, in Los Angeles, is where Styles wrote most of Fine Line. He also clearly spent a lot of time there with his significant other. Harry is so hurt that he can no longer speak with the person he cared so much for. However, he knows it’s his fault.

The last line left is the bridge. “And I get the feeling that you’ll never need me again.” This line shows how Styles understands he will most likely never speak to his lover again. This song is sad and beautiful. It displays a deep understanding of love and loss. It shows how love cannot always over power hurt cause by your partner. The message is quite depressing but so important to realize.
